The attack revealed a troubling reality: in the future, cyber weapons could be used against nuclear facilities to achieve conse-quences far more serious than those observed at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in Iran.
Stuxnet was discovered in the difficult context of existing tensions between Iran and the USA. The situation was strained by Iran trying to develop nuclear energy and possibly nuclear weapons, with circumstances even deteriorating to the point that Israel was ready to physically intervene to stop the Iranian nuclear program. Recognition of such threats exploded in June 2010 with the discovery of Stuxnet, a 500-kilobyte computer worm that infected the software of at least 14 industrial sites in Iran, including a uranium-enrichment plant. Although a computer virus relies on an unwitting victim to install it, a worm spreads on its own, often over a computer network.
