Ultrasound is another frequently used modality for the diagnosis of submandibular sialolithiasis. Sialoliths typically appear as echogenic round or oval structures producing an acoustic shadow on US [ 23 ].

In this study, 82 salivary glands in 79 consecutively registered patients with acute or recurrent parotid or submandibular gland swelling were ex-amined with 7.5-12 MHz linear probes. All sonographic examinations were performed by two experienced radiologists without knowledge of the final diagnosis.
The purpose of this article is to describe the aetiology as well as the medical and surgical management of submandibular sialolithiasis. A decision tree concerning the type of management and a table summarizing the main differential diagnoses will be proposed.
