28 Ιουλ 2020 · Prognosis: heartworm treatment success rates. With the three-dose adulticide protocol described above, in conjunction with doxycycline and macrocyclic lactones as recommended by the American Heartworm Society, 98% of dogs will be cleared of heartworm infection.
PREVENTION. The introduction of the macrolide agents ivermectin (Heartgard®), milbemycin oxime (Interceptor®), moxidectin (ProHeart® and ProHeart® 6) and selamectin (Revolution TM) has provided the veterinary profession with effective heartworm (HW) preventatives in a variety of formulations.
How successful is heartworm treatment? The 3-part injection of melarsomine is 98% effective at killing the adult worms. However, dogs who do not receive adequate rest after the injections are at risk for pulmonary embolisms, which can be fatal, due to dying worms blocking blood flow in the lungs.
Dog owners are usually surprised at the improvement in their dog following treatment for heartworms, especially if the dog had been demonstrating clinical signs of heartworm disease. Many dogs display renewed vigor and vitality, improved appetite, and weight gain.
Dogs treated for heartworm should be placed on heartworm preventive drugs (usually before treatment with melarsomine) and tested after 8–12 months to be sure all worms were killed. For those dogs that test positive, retesting might be required and, if infection is confirmed, a new round of melarsomine will be needed.
15 Νοε 2014 · Twenty-seven dogs (54%) experienced respiratory signs (coughing, dyspnea) and heart failure attributed to progressive heartworm disease and worm death. Seven dogs (14%) died within the treatment period. Owners frequently reported behavioral changes, such as depression and lethargy, suspected to be secondary to pain.
