D&D 5e spell damage comparison chart. Analysis. Here's the chart itself. I've calculated the average damage of pretty much every damaging spell in the PHB and EE Companion. I've left Storm of Vengeance out, though; too complex XD.
Damage/Effect. Control (...) You suggest a course of activity (limited to a sentence or two) and magically influence a creature you can see within range that can hear and understand you. Creatures that can't be charmed are immune to this effect. The suggestion must be worded in such a manner as to make the course of action sound reasonable.
Here is a Spreadsheet that I made of all damaging spells from the Player's Handbook for Wizards. I calculated average damage of the spell from level 1 to 5, including using higher level spell slots (up to level 5), to determine the highest damage to one target, one time.
2nd-level enchantment. Casting Time: 1 action. Range: 30 feet. Components: V, M (a snake’s tongue and either a bit of honeycomb or a drop of sweet oil) Duration: Concentration, up to 8 hours.
The table now includes the base average result of the spell's damage roll, and then calculates the effective average damage in base of that, the expected success rate and whether it saves for half. Added fields for damage type and for whether the spell has any riders (such as crowd control or debuffs).

Whenever a creature rolls a critical hit, I already have to roll a bunch of additional dice for damage. With this system, I then have to roll an additional d100, then find the right table, and then scroll through 18 possible results to find the one that applies.
