The sulfate or sulphate ion is a polyatomic anion with the empirical formula SO2− 4. Salts, acid derivatives, and peroxides of sulfate are widely used in industry. Sulfates occur widely in everyday life. Sulfates are salts of sulfuric acid and many are prepared from that acid.
29 Αυγ 2023 · Most sulfates, including those of \(\ce{Na^{+}}\), \(\ce{K^{+}}\), and \(\ce{NH4^{+}}\), are soluble in water. Exceptions that are insoluble are white lead(II) sulfate and white barium sulfate: \[\ce{BaSO4(s) <=> Ba2+(aq) + SO42-(aq)} \nonumber \] with \(K_{sp} = 1.4 \times 10^{-8}\) \[\ce{PbSO4(s) <=> Pb2+(aq) + SO42-(aq)} \nonumber \]
There are several tests for sulfate ion to identify from other anions in qualitative analysis. Some of metal sulfate compounds are soluble in water and some metal sulfates form precipitates. Sulfate compounds of several d block metal cations form colours.
The most frequently encountered forms of sulfur in fresh waters are as the anion sulfate (SO4-2) in combination with the common cations and as hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The thresholds of taste and smell were reported to be 0.2mg/L of sulfides in pulp mill wastes. Sulfate is not highly soluble.
Principle. The turbidimetric method of measuring sulphate is based upon the fact that barium sulphate tends to precipitate in a colloidal form and that this tendency is enhanced in presence of a sodium chloride-hydrochloric acid solution containing glycerol and other organic compounds.
The sulfate ion is a polyatomic anion with the empirical formula S O 42− and a molecular mass of 96.06 daltons; it consists of a central sulfur atom surrounded by four equivalent oxygen atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement.
It is a polyatomic anion and has an empirical formula SO 4-2. It is a salt of sulfuric acid. The sulfate anion is a very weak base. Most of the sulfates such as Na +, NH 4+ and K + are soluble in water whereas white barium sulfate and white lead (II) sulfate are insoluble in water.
