Testing for sulfate ion (Sulphate | SO 4 2-) in Qualitative Analysis. There are several tests for sulfate ion to identify from other anions in qualitative analysis. Some of metal sulfate compounds are soluble in water and some metal sulfates form precipitates.
Iodine reacts with sulphide in acid solution, oxidising it to sulphur; a titration based on this reaction is an accurate method for determining sulphides at concentration above 1mg/L if interferences are absent and if loss of H 2 S is avoided.
1 Σεπ 2008 · The determination of sulfate concentration in water by indirect EDTA titration is an instructive experiment that is easily implemented in an analytical chemistry laboratory course. A water sample is treated with excess barium chloride to precipitate sulfate ions as BaSO 4 (s).
29 Αυγ 2023 · Most sulfates, including those of \(\ce{Na^{+}}\), \(\ce{K^{+}}\), and \(\ce{NH4^{+}}\), are soluble in water. Exceptions that are insoluble are white lead(II) sulfate and white barium sulfate: \[\ce{BaSO4(s) <=> Ba2+(aq) + SO42-(aq)} \nonumber \] with \(K_{sp} = 1.4 \times 10^{-8}\) \[\ce{PbSO4(s) <=> Pb2+(aq) + SO42-(aq)} \nonumber \]
In an aqueous solution, sulfate ion undergoes the following reaction with barium: Ba2+(aq)+SO 4 2−(aq) ← → BaSO 4 (s) Ksp= Ba2+ SO42− =1.1x10−10 at 25 C Barium sulfate which forms as a crystalline precipitate, is collected on a suitable filter, washed with water, then ignited and weighed. From the mass of BaSO 4,
Water only ionises to a tiny extent giving minute concentrations of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions, so the presence of high concentrations of hydrogen ions (H+ or H3O+) and sulfate ions (SO4 2–) from the acid, makes water a much better electrical conductor (a much better electrolyte solution).
Learning Objectives. By the end of this section, you will be able to: Predict whether a salt solution will be acidic, basic, or neutral. Calculate the concentrations of the various species in a salt solution. Describe the acid ionization of hydrated metal ions. Salts with Acidic Ions.
