Depending on your plan, the phone you're trading in, and whether it's a new line or upgrade determines how much of a monthly discount you'll receive that counters the device payment of the phone. Example: According to Verizon.com, the iPhone 15 Pro 128GB is $1,000 USD.
There’s a good chance they can only check whether it’s flagged by the network or not. A scam a lot of people run is they buy a phone from a carrier, sell the phone and never pay a dime to the carrier. If they’re quick enough, they get a payout from Gazelle.com before being flagged by the network.

I was scammed once by a Russian who claimed he didn't receive an iPhone but an old nokia phone instead and included a picture of an old Nokia phone. Ebay believed him!!! I argued so hard with idiot customer service saying if I bought a Rolex and I just take a picture of a mickeymouse watch do you just simply believe me and I get to keep both?!!
