1 Ιαν 2022 · In this chapter, we will present a case of an anterior mediastinal mass with superior vena cava syndrome. We will discuss the important preoperative testing, preanesthetic considerations, risk stratification, and intraoperative anesthetic management.
The symptoms include venous congestion leading to upper extremity and facial swelling, dilated chest vein collaterals, dyspnea, and cough. It is most often due to thrombus formation or tumor infiltration of the vessel wall.
Mediastinal masses can present with symptoms, signs, and syndromes or incidentally. Selecting the appropriate diagnostic imaging study for mediastinal mass evaluation requires awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of the various imaging modalities with regard to tissue characterization, soft tissue contrast, and surveillance.
