Based on these waves, SAW sensors are conceptualized by employing piezoelectric crystals where the guided elastodynamic waves are generated through an electromechanical coupling.

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) is an acoustic wave traveling along the surface of a material exhibiting elasticity, with an amplitude that typically decays exponentially with depth into the material, such that they are confined to a depth of about one wavelength.
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) is a sensor based on measuring mechanical characteristics (mass density, viscosity, permittivity, conductivity). These devices can detect the interaction between acoustic waves and these characteristics’ changes in the medium where the wave was propagated.

The SAW sensor is basically composed of three main parts, namely a piezoelectric substrate, a pair of metal interfering transducers and a sensing area, in which the piezoelectric layer film has a decisive impact on performance [197–199].
