The final defined water mass in the Arctic Ocean is called Arctic Surface Water and is found in the depth range of 150–200 m (490–660 ft). The most important feature of this water mass is a section referred to as the sub-surface layer.

With mean depths ranging from 200 m to less than 50 m, the shelves are geographically separated into the Barents, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian, and Chukchi Seas north of the Eurasian continent, and the Beaufort Sea, Lincoln Sea, and Canadian Arctic Archipelago north of North America.
