The part of the Sun we call its surface – the photosphere – is a relatively cool 10,000 °F (5,500 °C). In one of the Sun’s biggest mysteries, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, gets hotter the farther it stretches from the surface.

The temperature at the surface of the Sun is about 10,000 Fahrenheit (5,600 Celsius). The temperature rises from the surface of the Sun inward towards the very hot center of the Sun where it reaches about 27,000,000 Fahrenheit (15,000,000 Celsius).
It is only about 500 km (300 miles) wide, a much thinner layer than the interior solar regions. The temperature of the photosphere is around 5,500 °C (9,900 °F), which is much cooler than the Sun's core. Most of the light energy produced in the Sun’s core escapes from the photosphere.
