This series of seven papers collates for the first time the evidence for five key areas of surgical practice relating to the treatment of chronic constipation: colonic resection, rectal suspension, rectal wall excision, reinforcement of the rectovaginal septum and sacral nerve stimulation.
Clinicians need to consider primary as well as secondary causes of constipation in elderly individuals because the cause is often multifactorial. Diagnostic algorithms should eliminate red-flag symptoms that may indicate a malignancy but also consider pelvic floor dysfunction, which is more common in this age group.
24 Αυγ 2020 · In the elderly, constipation and fecal incontinence are common and often distressing symptoms that can often be managed by addressing bowel disturbances. Selected diagnostic tests, prescription medications, and, infrequently, surgical options should be considered when necessary.
Surgery should be reserved for patients with debilitating symptoms from constipation that have significant nega-tive effects on their quality of life.
