A national household and patient survey is currently in progress to estimate the proportion of Pakistan’s population that has access to surgery within 2 hours and to document the financial and logistical challenges faced by patients in accessing care for basic surgical care procedures at the public sector hospitals of Pakistan.
As the COVID-19 pandemic took its grip in early 2020, public hospitals in Pakistan had to slowly halt out-patient services and elective surgeries [1,2]. The risk of spread was high in public hospitals, without temporary slowing of services, where the surgical clinic alone saw a daily census of over a hundred patients.
