5 Σεπ 2020 · In this chapter, sustainability definitions are reviewed and the historical context for sustainability is briefly described. Then sustainability is discussed, focusing on its economic, environmental, and social dimensions, and the related concept of sustainable development is examined.
Sustainability is based on three dimensions: Environmental sustainability occurs when humanity’s rate of. consumption does not exceed nature’s rate of replenishment and when humanity’s rate of generating pollution and emitting greenhouse gases does not exceed nature’s rate of restoration.
The definition and set of five sustainability principles proposed below seeks to advance and restore rigor to the ideas underlying the concept of sustainability. Its development was informed by a number of existing frameworks and was inspired, in particular, by the work of R. Buckminster Fuller.
