Wetlands can take many forms, including peatbogs and mangrove swamps. Boosting biodiversity and locking away more carbon from our atmosphere than forests, wetlands are incredible ecosystems that need our protection.
Swamp vegetation filters pollutants, making water potable. Wetlands provide livelihoods for one billion people and help feed the world. Peatlands store 30% of all land-based carbon, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Lakes and rivers supply food and medicine.
Wetland conservation is aimed at protecting and preserving areas of land including marshes, swamps, bogs, and fens that are covered by water seasonally or permanently due to a variety of threats from both natural and anthropogenic hazards. Some examples of these hazards include habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species.
