All species of oaks are susceptible; however, Texas red oak and live oaks in the Hill Country and South Central areas are the most commonly affected. Post oak is rarely affected. The foliage of infected Texas red oaks turns pale green, then yellow and finally brown. Texas red oaks generally die within 7 to 30 days after the first disease symptom.
Red oaks which wilt in the late summer or early fall develop spore mats under their bark during the next spring. As the mats develop, the bark sloughs off or ruptures exposing the fungus. Insects are attracted to the mats.
