22 Σεπ 2021 · A bark falling off of an oak tree can indicate that the oak tree is unhealthy. When barks fall from a tree, it can signal disease, or a fungus called Hypoxylon canker , that affects our hardwood trees.
All species of oaks are susceptible; however, Texas red oak and live oaks in the Hill Country and South Central areas are the most commonly affected. Post oak is rarely affected.
Red oaks which wilt in the late summer or early fall develop spore mats under their bark during the next spring. As the mats develop, the bark sloughs off or ruptures exposing the fungus. Insects are attracted to the mats.
Texas oak wilt is the most devastating tree disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas, and it’s killing our valuable oak trees at epidemic proportions. Perhaps you have seen diseased red oak trees from a distance. In summer when a landscape should be rich green, you may spot bright, autumn colored foliage in the bunch.
Peeled bark or a cut branch from an infected tree may show a brown or black discoloration in the outer annual sapwood ring. Look-alikes: Bacterial leaf scorch, tubakia leaf spot, and all problems causing dieback.
