Sweetgum is a tall, deciduous tree native to parts of the eastern United States, Mexico, and Central America. It has glossy, star-shaped leaves that change color in fall.
Margins are toothed and green on both sides, but slightly lighter green on the bottom. Its common name may come from the fresh leaves, that when crushed, give off a mild, pleasant odor. Twigs and branches are often corky-winged, an unusual feature, in just a few trees in temperate regions.
‘Rotundiloba’ or Roundleaf Sweetgum grows to a height of about 75 feet and may spread to 50 feet (Fig. 1). The beautifully glossy, star-shaped leaves have rounded tips and turn deep purple in the fall (USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7) and early winter (USDA hardiness zones 8 and 9). Branches are covered with characteristic corky projections.
