Sweetgum grows in a narrow pyramid to a height of 75 feet and may spread to 50 feet (Fig. 1). The beautifully glossy, star-shaped leaves turn bright red, purple, yellow or orange in the fall (USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7) and early winter (USDA hardiness zones 8 and 9).
Actively growing leaves are fragrant when crushed. They are palmate in shape with five to seven lobes and saw-toothed margins. Glossy-green in summer, the leaves turn bright yellow to deep red in the fall. The undersides of the leaves are pale green with a coating of fine white hairs. The small, greenish inconspicuous flowers have no true petals.
Liquidambar styraciflua L., sweetgum, is native to southeastern, east-central, and south-central United States, southern Mexico, and central America. It is a large deciduous hardwood tree, which can grow to over 100 feet in height and 3 to 5 feet in diameter, with a symmetrical, cone-shaped crown.

The leaves of American Sweetgum are star-shaped, dark glossy green in summer, and turning to rich yellow-purple- red tones in the fall. Because Sweetgums are often grown from seed, fall color can vary from tree to tree.
