30 Μαρ 2024 · Heartworm in dogs is a serious and potentially fatal parasite-borne disease that can affect dogs of all breeds and ages, as well as other species including coyotes, foxes, cats, and even humans. Yet the condition often goes undiagnosed because some dog heartworm symptoms can be easy to miss.
Common signs of heartworm infection include coughing, exercise intolerance, failure to grow, labored breathing, a blue or purplish discoloration of the skin and gums, spitting up blood, fainting, nose bleeding, and the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.
Most infected dogs are subclinically affected, but the most common clinical signs are weight loss, exercise intolerance, cough, and labored breathing. Prevention, with macrocyclic lactones, is crucial. Clearing a heartworm infection typically requires melarsomine, an organic arsenic compound, administered IM in three injections.
There are four classes, or stages, of heartworm disease: Class 1: No symptoms or mild symptoms (e.g. occasional cough). Class 2: Mild to moderate symptoms (e.g. occasional cough and fatigue moderate activity). Heart and lung changes are usually seen on chest x-rays.
