22 Ιαν 2024 · When there’s a high level of free T4 in the bloodstream, the pituitary is essentially “inhibited”, producing almost no TSH, with blood levels below 0.1 mU/L. The patient therefore has very low levels of TSH, but high levels of free T4, resulting in overt hyperthyroidism.
5 Σεπ 2023 · Tests measuring free T4 – either a free T4 (FT4) or free T4 index (FTI) – more accurately reflect how the thyroid gland is functioning when checked with a TSH. The finding of an elevated TSH and low FT4 or FTI indicates primary hypothyroidism due to disease in the thyroid gland.
If the TSH level is low and the FT4 result is high this suggests an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) that requires treatment. If the TSH level is slightly raised but the FT4 level is still within the normal reference range this is called subclinical hypothyroidism or mild thyroid failure.

If the second test shows high TSH but T-4 and T-3 are in the standard range, then the diagnosis is a condition called subclinical hypothyroidism.
