29 Νοε 2017 · New York City is a place where rats climb out of toilets, bite babies in their cribs, crawl on sleeping commuters, take over a Taco Bell restaurant, and drag an entire slice of pizza down...
For a long time, the number of rats in New York City was unknown, and a common urban legend declared there were up to five times as many rats as people. However, a 2023 study estimates that there are approximately 3 million rats in New York, which is close to a third of New York's human population. The city's rat population is dominated by the ...
26 Φεβ 2020 · In a study 1 posted to bioRxiv this month, geneticists identified dozens of genes involved in diet, behaviour and movement that might have helped New York rats to thrive.
9 Ιουν 2018 · In the new report, the biologist and his colleagues mapped the genetics of rats in four cities in the New World: New Orleans, New York, Vancouver and the Brazilian city of Salvador. The researchers captured at least 150 rats in each city, snipped off a bit of tissue and probed the samples for 15,000 genetic markers.
Did genetic adaptation play a role in the spread of rats in cities? To approach this question, we collected whole-genome sequences from 29 brown rats from New York City (NYC) and scanned for genetic signatures of adaptation.
Wondering just how big these rodents can get? Brace yourself for a fascinating dive into the underground world of oversized city-dwelling rats. From their surprising size to their clever survival tactics, we'll uncover the truth behind these larger-than-life animals roaming the streets of NYC.
To look for selective sweeps in NYC brown rats, we se-quenced whole genomes of 29 rats trapped throughout Manhattan, New York City, USA. The animals were chosen to represent the geographic distribution of Manhattan rats while excluding genetic relatives (fig. 1) (Combs, Puckett, et al. 2018).
