The Northwestern Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers Historic District is a veterans' hospital located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with roots going back to the Civil War.
13 Φεβ 2024 · Today the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and The Alexander Company announced plans to rehabilitate and reuse three additional historic buildings on the Milwaukee VA campus.
The Milwaukee Soldiers Home, on the grounds of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center overlooking American Family Field, was built in 1867 as a place of healing for veterans returning from the Civil War.
VA Historic Property Highlights - Milwaukee. “Old Main” at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was one of the first buildings built at the Northwestern branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers.
The current 10-story hospital building opened in 1966. At the time, with 1,000 beds, it was one of the largest VA hospitals, with numerous modern features such as built-in oxygen, air conditioning and paging systems. It was named after Milwaukee Congressman Clement J. Zablocki in 1984.
