Tampax was an independent company based in Palmer, Massachusetts and headquartered in New York City for over 50 years. Renamed Tambrands, Inc. in 1984, the company was purchased by Procter & Gamble in 1997. Tampax is available in over 100 countries; there is no distribution in Germany and Austria.

Several patents for menstrual tampons were filed in the late 1920s and early 1930s. However, the design that is usually cited as the first successfully marketed tampon originated with the patent filed in 1931 by E.C. Haas. This design, with its paper-tube applicator, became the Tampax tampon.

The product name “ Tampax,” which originated from “tampon” and “vaginal packs,” was also trademarked and later sold to businesswoman Gertrude Tendrich for $32,000.
Gertrude Tendrich founded the Tampax company for the mass production of tampons after buying the patent and trademark rights from Earle Haas.
