There are / were legitimate tuning boxes for TDI. Many piggyback tuners will either interpret CAN signals or analog values. On the old 90hp ALH TDI I ran a fuel and boost tuning box in combination with fuel and exhaust mods and had dyno results over 150whp / 300wtq

The chaps at TDI Tuning let us see their latest tuning box on a 3.0 v6 TDi Audi A6 Allroad backed up with Dyno results. We must stress there are tuning boxes and there are tuning boxes.
