AP English Literature and Composition Conceptual Framework Effective Fall 2019. This conceptual framework organizes course content according to the big ideas, which enables teachers to trace a particular big idea and its related enduring understanding, its course skills, and all the essential knowledge statements associated with those skills.
The reading portion of the AP® Literature and Composition Exam asks you to go beyond what a text says to how and why the text says it. To that end, it tests your ability to do the following: • Understand the significance of diction (word choice), imagery, and symbols, and how they reveal information about plot, setting, and characters.
mastering the following skills upon entering AP English Literature: • Constructing independent thesis statements • Correctly and consistently applying MLA format • Engaging in dynamic research techniques • Performing literary analysis • Integrating quotations and using proper paraphrasing technique • Writing purposeful topic sentences
While students may consider a variety of literary techniques, they provide a sustained, competent reading of the passage. Although these essays may not be error-free and are less perceptive or less convincing than 9–8 essays, the ideas are presented with clarity and control and refer to the text for support.
