Temperate coniferous forests are common in the coastal areas of regions that have mild winters and heavy rainfall, or inland in drier climates or montane areas. Many species of trees inhabit these forests including pine, cedar, fir, and redwood.
One type of coniferous forest, the northern boreal forest, is found in 50° to 60°N latitudes. Another type, temperate coniferous forests, grows in lower latitudes of North America, Europe, and Asia, in the high elevations of mountains.

The northern coniferous forest, or taiga, extends across North America from the Pacific to the Atlantic, across northern Europe through Scandinavia and Russia, and across Asia through Siberia to Mongolia, northern China, and northern Japan.

Outstanding examples of temperate coniferous forests on the world heritage list include the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, Yellowstone and other mountain areas, while the Redwood parks and temperate rainforests of Olympic National Park are unique coastal variants.
