Constitution Of The State Of Tennessee. The first Constitution of the state of Tennessee was written in Knoxville during the winter of 1796, the year the state was created from the geographic area known as the Southwest Territory.
Tennessee has had three state constitutions. The current state constitution has 11 articles. The current Tennessee Constitution has been amended 11 times since 2006. Voters last approved four amendments to the Tennessee Constitution on November 8, 2022.
These lesson plans link with the current Tennessee social studies curriculum standards using the information provided in the Blue Book to utilize in civics and government classes. There are a limited number of hard copies of Blue Books available.
In this lesson students will explore how the Tennessee Constitution distributes power and authority within government. They will begin with the 1796 Constitution and then see what changes have been made in the succeeding years.
