PHYSICS 11 FORCES & NEWTON’S LAWS WORKSHEET 1 1. Phoebe Physics pulls a wagon with a force of 80 N. a) What is the net force if the force of friction between the wagon and the ground is 12 N? b) If she uses 80 N to pull the wagon through a mud puddle, and the net force on the wagon is 38 N, what friction force acts on the wagon? 2.
calculate the magnitudes and directions of forces provided by ropes under tension that hold objects in equilibrium, calculate the magnitudes and directions of forces provided by ropes under tension that accelerate objects.
Case A. Determine tension in each cable. (Hint: There is more than one way to define the system.) The cable at left exerts a –30 N force. Write the equation for the sum of the forces in the x-direction. What is the value of FT2? Write the equation for the sum of the forces in the y-direction. What is the force of gravity acting on the box?

Any flexible connector, such as a string, rope, chain, wire, or cable, can exert pulls only parallel to its length; thus, a force carried by a flexible connector is a tension with direction parallel to the connector.

Tension is an internal force for the system as a whole, but tension minus the parallel component of the cart's weight is the net force acting on the cart. Apply Newton's second law to the cart by itself. (Let right be the positive direction since that's the direction the cart is accelerating.)
