The massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus) is a venomous rattlesnake species found in midwestern North America. Like all rattlesnakes, it belongs to the pit viper family.
3 Απρ 2024 · Massasaugas are recognisable by eyemask or hourglass-shaped blotches, which are the densest black. On its flanks, the blotches are smaller, but just as tightly packed and vividly black. Overall, they have a blacker appearance than the timber rattlesnake from a distance.

With its western extreme in southeastern Arizona, the massasauga is found through many of the midwestern states and is present as far east as portions of New York and adjacent Canada. Small, peripheral populations can also be found in northern Mexico. Rattlesnakes are not generally aggressive and will likely flee if given a chance.

Massasauga have a distinctive dark brown eye stripe that extends back from each eye to the corners of the mouth.
