The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) operates a Safe Prisons/PREA Program for the purpose of preventing and limiting offender-on-offender sexual abuse and sexual harassment, physical assaults and extortion.
PREA investigates all reports of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and retaliation in connection with sexual abuse or harassment and provides information, education, services for sexual abuse survivors.
1 Οκτ 2021 · Fueled by the 1995 suicide of her son, 17-year-old Rodney Hulin, Jr., Linda Bruntmyer became one of the main advocates for Congress to pass the landmark Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). Rodney was sent to the notorious Clemens Unit in Texas for the crime of setting fire to a dumpster.
Posters, brochures, and TDCJ website notification provides an address, phone number, and information regarding the responsibilities and authority of the PREA Ombudsman and how to report sexual abuse and sexual harassment. In CY 2021, the PREA Ombudsman Office received 3,090 public and inmate inquiries.
Allegations of sexual abuse and sexual harassment are based on the most recent definitions provided by BJS and reporting requirements as specified in the National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape, under 28 CFR part 115.
