Though the movie was entirely fictional, the themes I saw in the film reminded me of real events that have happened in the world, such as Chernobyl and DuPoint poisoning. It hit me hard emotionally for that reason.
Characters are introduced and you have no idea whether they make it or die in the very next scene. There's no real hero or badass protagonist or final girl. It felt like real life. It's just every day people that get sick and tragically die. To me, that made the whole thing even more terrifying.
I think it's affected me so intensely because I know about real monstrosities like this that have happened in real life. I don't know if others have seen The Bay because I came across it randomly, and nobody has ever mentioned it to be before.
