This chapter introduces the philosophical foundations of the theory of science, locates the theory of science in the context and in distinction to other ‘sciences of science’, reconstructs attempts to determine science and scientificity more closely and to define the concept of ‘truth’.
18 Μαΐ 2022 · In this chapter, we explore the definition and breadth of this field, whilst emphasising the practical application of philosophy of science terms such as ‘paradigm’, ‘ontology’ and ‘epistemology’ for those conducting and interpreting health professions education research.
First of all, the place of the philosophy of science in a wide context of philo-sophical and other “science of sciences” (Stegmüller, 1973) will be identified and described below, and some epistemological questions and distinctions relevant to the philosophy of science will be introduced (Sect. 3.1.1).
