Philosophy of science focuses on metaphysical, epistemic and semantic aspects of scientific practice, and overlaps with metaphysics, ontology, logic, and epistemology, for example, when it explores the relationship between science and the concept of truth.

This chapter introduces the philosophical foundations of the theory of science, locates the theory of science in the context and in distinction to other ‘sciences of science’, reconstructs attempts to determine science and scientificity more closely and to define the concept of ‘truth’.
