Neon is a colorless, odorless, inert monatomic gas under standard conditions, with approximately two-thirds the density of air. Neon was discovered in 1898 alongside krypton and xenon, identified as one of the three remaining rare inert elements in dry air after the removal of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide.
Neon is a noble gas belonging to first p-block of periodic table. It is the first element forming a true octet of electrons and hence is inert just like its lighter analogue, helium. It is the second lightest noble gas and glows reddish-orange in vacuum discharge tube. Neon is a colourless, odourless monoatomic gas.

Neon is in the air all around us, but it’s only a small part of air: 54,900 liters of dry air contains 1 liter of neon. Another way of saying this is that air contains 0.00182% neon by volume. We get neon by fractional distillation of liquid air, which means we cool air until it’s a liquid.
