From the outside, they look like many American country churches built around the turn of the last century -- arched Gothic Revival windows, facades clad in white frame siding or in stone, lone steeples rising up into the Texas sky.

6 Οκτ 2023 · Living relics of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the painted churches of Texas dot the central Hill Country. Modeled after the ancient gothic cathedrals of Europe, they were built and adorned by immigrants who wanted to transport a bit of their old life to the New World.
Gottfried Flury, a Swiss-born artist from Moulton, TX, painted much of the interior. Flury used a combination of stencils, infill painting, and freehand techniques, Flury’s trompe-l’œil designs recreated the stone vaults and Gothic architecture reminiscent of central European churches.
3 Ιουλ 2023 · Two years later, John F. Bujnoch built the current church as an example of early twentieth-century Carpenter Gothic, improvising with wood what had been done with stone in Europe.
Only 20 painted churches exist, and all of them are located within the bucolic rolling hills of Texas Hill Country. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, these churches were created painstakingly by thousands of immigrants.
