This paper therefore emphasizes the need to study history of the computer because a proper study and understanding of the evolution of computers will undoubtedly help to greatly improve on computer technologies.
The History of Computing series publishes high-quality books which address the history of computing, with an emphasis on the externalist view of this history, more accessible to a wider audience.
Computers truly came into their own as great inventions in the last two decades of the 20th century. But their history stretches back more than 2500 years to the abacus: a simple calculator made from beads and wires, which is still used in some parts of the world today.
What started as an abstract philosophical quest ended up setting the course for society for over a century and continues to be one of the most profound parts of modern life. The goal of this chapter is to trace an outline of where computing started, where it has been, and where it is now.
A Brief History of the Computer The history of the computer can be divided into six generations each of which was marked by critical conceptual advances.
As of 2018, there are five generations of the computer. Types of Computer Generation and examples 1940 – 1956: First Generation – Vacuum Tubes The first generation of computers used vacuum tubes as a major piece of technology. Vacuum tubes were widely used in computers from 1940 through 1956.
