This study surveyed 3,124 jails across the U.S. to determine if the jail screens for mental illness; if yes, what screen they use; and if they use the BJMHS, how it is used and views of its utility. There are 695 (22%) unduplicated jails in the sample ranging in capacity from 5 to over 5000.

1 Ιουλ 2005 · The study reported here sought to validate a revision of the Referral Decision Scale (RDS)—the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS)—which provides an even briefer and more practical tool for use in jails.
1 Μαΐ 2007 · The researchers created short questionnaires that have accurately identified inmates who required mental health interventions. One mental health screening instrument, the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS), was proven effective for men and is being adapted for women.
Results: Results show that the odds of a positive screen overall increased with each jail booking, as did the odds of referral for any other reason. In contrast, the odds of screening positive for two or more current symptoms and prior hospitalization decreased.
