William Smith (c. 1790–1847) [ 1 ] was an English captain born in Blyth, Northumberland, who discovered the South Shetland Islands, an archipelago off the Graham Land in Antarctica. His discovery was the first ever made south of 60° south latitude, in the present Antarctic Treaty area.
1819 - 1820. Edward Bransfield, 1785 - 1852. A contender for being the first to discover Antarctica. The expedition arose following the discovery the previous year of the South Shetland Islands by merchant ship captain William Smith.
When Smith reported what he had found on returning to Valparaiso, Chile, Captain Shirreff of the British Royal Navy chartered the ship and appointed Bransfield as captain to return south the following season and investigate the area further.
