Round Barn Farm is home to the historic and county-landmarked Round Barn completed by John C. Baker in 1898, constructed of wood salvaged from the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. The 20-sided polygonal barn remains one of the largest round barns in Illinois.

The 20-sided polygonal barn remains one of the largest round barns in Illinois. A true representation of our local heritage, Round Barn Farm was originally part of Five Mile Grove, the primary location of the first European settlement in what is now known as Manhattan.
First built by the Shakers in 1824, round barns required less lumber and bracing the frame. Construction was also simplified, as no elaborate scaffolding was required for the circular arched roof. The barns also proved more resilient against to prairie storms.
Ryan’s Round Barn originated on the farm of Dr. Laurence Ryan, built as a retreat from his work as surgeon and chief of the medical staff at St. Anthony Hospital in Chicago. Influenced by the Pennsylvania Dutch, Ryan developed plans for the round barn to house 50 purebred Black Angus cattle.
Round Barns in Illinois was the subject of a Multiple Property Submission to the National Register of Historic Places in the U.S. state of Illinois. The submission consists of 18 Illinois round barns located throughout the state. The list had major additions in 1982 and 1984.
