The Second Battle of Charleston Harbor, also known as the Siege of Charleston Harbor, the Siege of Fort Wagner, or the Battle of Morris Island, took place during the American Civil War in the late summer of 1863 between a combined U.S. Army/Navy force and the Confederate defenses of Charleston, South Carolina.
19 Απρ 2016 · With its interior connections severed, Federal troops landing at Bulls Bay north of the city, and enemy troops advancing overland from the south, Charleston was finally evacuated on February 17, 1865, ending its 567-day siege.
The first hostile shots were fired by South Carolina troops in January of 1861 to warn off the “Star of the West” as it attempted to reinforce Fort Sumter then held by Union forces. But most historians trace the beginning of the war to April 12th, 1861 when Confederate troops fired on the fort.
On April 12, 1861, Fort Sumter was fired on by the Confederate batteries located around the Charleston Harbor. Within thirty-four hours, the fort had surrendered. From that moment on, the recapturing of Fort Sumter became one of the Union's most important objectives.

In the summer of 1863, the Union forces focused on taking Morris Island near the entrance to the harbor. After getting a foothold on the island, they began a siege of Charleston that lasted 587 days.
30 Σεπ 2024 · The United States Army began building Fort Sumter on an artificial island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor in 1829. The fort was named for Thomas Sumter, a general who had won key victories against the British in the Carolinas during the American Revolution.
