The Sugar Act marked the first time that the British Parliament adopted duties that were frankly designed to raise revenues in the colonies and were not merely intended to regulate trade. The American colonists strongly objected to this legislation. They resented that the Sugar Act regulated the export of lumber and iron from the colonies.
