11 Οκτ 2024 · The Short Answer: What is the thermosphere? The thermosphere is a layer of Earth’s atmosphere. The thermosphere is located above the mesosphere and below the exosphere. The heat that won't keep you warm. The thermosphere lies between the exosphere and the mesosphere.
The thermosphere is the layer in the Earth's atmosphere directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere. Within this layer of the atmosphere, ultraviolet radiation causes photoionization/photodissociation of molecules, creating ions; the thermosphere thus constitutes the larger part of the ionosphere.
The atmosphere is vital for all life on the planet, not only humans, and for reasons other than supplying gases needed for respiration and photosynthesis. Winds also transport water into the interiors of large areas of land, which would otherwise rapidly become parched desert.
Earth’s atmosphere is composed of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and one percent other gases. These gases are found in atmospheric layers (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere) defined by unique features such as temperature and pressure.
In everyday life, temperature is measured above and below an arbitrary zero point (0°C in the Celsius scale). However, scientific temperatures are measured in kelvin (K). The zero on the kelvin scale is the point where molecules have no kinetic energy, known as absolute zero.
