Some Thrips species leave shiny or metallic-looking deposits on plant surfaces as they feed. Small black specks of excrement may also be seen either on the leaf surface or on the surface surrounding the planter below.

Common colours for the adults are brown, black or yellow and when in the larvae stage, they are a yellow, greenish colour .
Heavily infested plants will show yellow and brown, almost stippled patches in an irregular pattern, and new growth can look stunted, contorted, or deformed. You may also see sooty black spots along leaves or stems. This is thrips fecal matter, which can also be a vector for disease.
Another sign of thrips is when new leaves just brown off and die before unfurling. It can be a root problem, but I always check for thrips when I see this: Thrips can also kill the leaves of smaller plants, before you even realising that you had a problem.
Though thrips on houseplants are found throughout the world, some common species are greenhouse thrips, onion thrips, and Western flower thrips. Because every species has different habits and preferences, it is crucial to identify the exact kind of thrips that are infesting your houseplants.
