14 Φεβ 2021 · Thrips are small, slender insects that suck the juices out of the leaves, stems, buds and flowers. They are generally under a quarter-inch in length when they are adults. Common colours for the adults are brown, black or yellow and when in the larvae stage, they are a yellow, greenish colour .
17 Ιαν 2024 · Usually the first sign of thrip damage is faded or dirty looking leaves. In addition, flower buds may drop, be malformed, or fail to open. The affected leaves will start by turning white or grayish in color, then eventually they’ll turn brown as the damaged areas begin to die.
Heavily infested plants will show yellow and brown, almost stippled patches in an irregular pattern, and new growth can look stunted, contorted, or deformed. You may also see sooty black spots along leaves or stems. This is thrips fecal matter, which can also be a vector for disease.
Thrips can be difficult to detect due to their size and because they often hide in the leaf litter or on the undersides of leaves. Spotting the damage they're causing to your plant is often a more reliable way to alert you to their presence.
19 Ιαν 2023 · There are many species of thrips and some feed on leaves, flowers, buds, and even fruit. Damage on leaves may look like white or silver colored streaks. Sometimes the growing points will be contorted. Leaves that have a heavy thrip infestation will appear silvery and brown.
15 Μαρ 2020 · Video by Lauren Sottile. To treat a plant for thrips, the first step is to hose the plant down under the sink or shower faucet, dislodging the bugs. Take care not to overwater the soil with the runoff. If it's not possible to move the plant to a water source, use a spray bottle and microfiber cloth and spray and wipe each leaf.
Another sign of thrips is when new leaves just brown off and die before unfurling. It can be a root problem, but I always check for thrips when I see this: Thrips can also kill the leaves of smaller plants, before you even realising that you had a problem.
