According to the Whickham survey, the incidence of elevated TSH is about 7.6% in the general female population but rises to 17% in women over 70 years of age. The risk for developing hypothyroidism is 1.4/1000/year in women 18-24 years of age, 6.7/1000/year in women 65-74 years of age, and 14/1000/year in women 75-80 years of age [ 7 , 8 ].
