The Battle of Tinian was a battle of the Pacific campaign of World War 2, fought on the island of Tinian in the Mariana Islands from 24 July until 1 August 1944. The 9000 man Japanese garrison was eliminated, and the island joined Saipan and Guam as a base for the 20th Air Force.
With the completion of its fourth runway in May 1945, North Field (Tinian) became the largest airport in the world. Its four 8500 ft. long runways supported 265 B-29s, their taxiways, hardstands and ground crews with base facilities and operations that maintained, repaired and serviced the B-29s.

Oblique airphoto of North Field, Tinian, 1945, showing the massive runway system and number of hardstands. On each hardstand, a B-29 was parked and maintained. North Field is a World War II airfield on Tinian in the Mariana Islands. Abandoned after the war, today North Field is a tourist attraction.
