Tokaji (Hungarian: of Tokaj Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈtokɒji]) or Tokay is the name of the wines from the Tokaj wine region (also Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region or Tokaj-Hegyalja) in Hungary or the adjoining Tokaj wine region in Slovakia.
7 Μαΐ 2019 · Tokaj is the birthplace of one of the world’s oldest sweet wines, Tokaji Aszú (which is also the best, at least in our humble opinions). Though it’s a spectacularly complex wine, there’s so much more to this region than the Aszú, including plenty of pretty amazing dry white wines.
6 Σεπ 2024 · Tokaj is a cool-climate wine region that sits on the remains of hundreds of volcanic eruptions. The bedrock mainly consists of rhyolite and andesite with a mineral-rich clay topsoil, yielding wines that can be concentrated and minerally.
10 Δεκ 2018 · Tokaji aszú is a golden colored wine—which comes in endless shades of gold—with the older vintages turning darker shades of amber as they age. It’s a rich wine, with a thick and creamy texture (from the high sugar content), concentrated flavors, and a huge diversity of flavors and styles.
French king Louis XIV said of Aszú wine he received from Francis II Rákóczi: “C’est le roi des vins, et le vin des rois” – “The king of wines, the wine of kings”. The area became known as Tokaj-Hegyalja (lit. Tokaj Foothills), and for easy understanding the wine was called Tokaji wine.
Tokaji is the name used to describe wine from the Tokaj region in northeastern Hungary. Though dry wine is made here, the region’s most famous wines are lusciously sweet, and this is what most people refer to when they use the name Tokaji. The sweet wines of Tokaji are some of the world’s greatest.
