Pope Sixtus V (Italian: Sisto V; 13 December 1521 – 27 August 1590), born Felice Piergentile, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 24 April 1585 to his death, in August 1590.
A tireless worker, best remembered for completing the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, building the Vatican Library and for erecting a series of obelisks in key places throughout Rome including St. Peter's Square. He was one of the great figures of the Counter Reformation.

The confessio is the descendent of the 13th century Cappella del Presepe (Chapel of the Crib). The Cappella Sistina, in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, was designed for Pope Sixtus V (r. 1585-90) by by Domenico Fontana (1543-1607).
Sixtus V was the pope from 1585 to 1590, who reformed the Roman Curia. He entered the Franciscan order in 1533 and was ordained at Siena in 1547. He served twice (1557–60) as inquisitor general in Venice, his severity there causing his recall.
