Tonbridge Castle. Tonbridge Castle is a Motte and Bailey castle. The original castle was built in 1070, soon after the Battle of Hastings, by Richard Fitzgilbert (AKA Richard De Clare). It was originally a wooden structure.

Early history. An 1896 reconstruction of Tonbridge Castle in the 13th century. Following the Norman Conquest, Richard Fitz Gilbert was granted land in Kent to guard the crossing of the River Medway. He erected a simple Motte-and-bailey castle on the site.
